Greenport schools propose budget that doubles tax cap, cuts 21 positions - The Suffolk Times

The Greenport School District proposed a $26 million budget that cuts nearly two dozen positions and more than doubles the state tax cap as officials try to rein in years of reserve spending.

The $25,995,000 spending plan for the 2026-27 school year, presented Tuesday, March 31, includes a 7.91% tax levy increase, far above the district’s 3.04% cap. For homeowners, that would mean about $43 more per month.

The proposal comes as district officials move away from a pattern of using one-time rese...

Terms of the deal were not disclosed. Universal Mus...

'Working Waterfront' bill offers lifeline to North Fork businesses - The Suffolk Times

Jeff Strong gets calls regularly asking him to sell his Mattituck marina for development. He declines. For the past six years, he and his team have been trying to get approval for a storage building to expand their indoor capacity at Strong’s Marine — just to keep operating as a working waterfront.

Now, a new Suffolk County law might ease that pressure.

County Executive Ed Romaine signed the “working waterfront” bill at Greenport’s railroad dock Sept. 29, establishing protections for the area’...

Long Beach's spending plan proposes 1.04 percent tax increase - Herald Community Newspapers

Throughout their campaign for City Council last fall, Brendan Finn, Chris Fiumara and Mike Reinhart made it clear to Long Beach residents that they were going to work to prevent taxes from increasing.

That turns out to be easier said than done.

Long Beach’s 219-page proposed budget for fiscal year 2024-25, which was released on the city’s website late last month and presented at Tuesday night’s council meeting by Comptroller Inna Reznik and City Manager Dan Creighton, includes a homestead tax...
